Designed by famed Miami Modern architect Morris Lapidus, 3 Island Avenue, originally known as Terrace Towers Apartments, was completed in 1962.
Lapidus and his wife lived for many years in the building in Apartment 31, a 2,500 square foot, 2-story unit. In 2001, Lapidus passed away at the age of 98 in his apartment.
The book "Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide featuring Downtown, the Beaches, and Coconut Grove" by Allan T. Shulman, Randall C. Robinson Jr., and James F. Donnelly (University Press of Florida, 2010) describes Terrace Towers as follows:
"Lapidus's touch is visible in the cantilevered folded-plate concrete canopy at the automotive drop-off as well as in the 2-story lobby."
